Love's Lost Romeo...
We were told that this 2 year old Yorkie was a happy, healthy little boy who's owner just didn't have enough time to spend with him. He was kept in a crate at least 12 hours a day. Of course we were happy to agree to find him a wonderful home!
Mike and Dan got Romeo on Saturday morning. He seemed just fine! Got along great with everyone. The following morning, Mike awoke to find Romeo in terrible distress, acting disoriented and close to a computer cord with bite marks on it. Thinking he had been electrocuted Mike rushed he to the emergency clinic where they put him on IV's, monitored his heart and kept him for observation for the day - oddly there were no electrical burns in his mouth. The vet mentioned that he continued with a chewing motion. That evening he went back to his foster home.
During the following week he was just as happy as he could be - going for walks, playing with the other dogs, eating great food, and being loved. He also went to visit with people who fell in love with him and wanted to adopt him. (Our policy is to keep all dogs for at least two weeks to be certain we know all we can about each dog) so Romeo returned to his foster home, with the intention of going to his new home the following week.
Five days later, Mike noticed that Romeo was again acting disoriented and drooling profusely so he and Romeo made another trip to the vet...who found nothing wrong. Shortly after arriving home, Romeo went into a grand mal seizure. Mike immediately rushed back to the vet and Romeo was admitted to the clinic. In spite of hours of multiple medications his seizures could not be controlled. The vet told us we had two choices - have him put into a medical coma - knowing that if they were able to bring him out of the coma he would never be a normal dog - or to have him euthanized. Mike and Dan asked to be with him in his final moments. They held him and told him what a wonderful little boy he was and how much they loved him while Romeo slipped quietly from their loving arms into the arms of an angel.
He had one full, seemingly happy week, to be a dog surrounded by love and attention...for that we are grateful. Mike and Dan, themselves, paid to have him cremated because in that short week Romeo had become part of their lives. His ashes are in the home where he was loved and cared for, they are where they should be.
What caused this to happen? Was he electrocuted? NO!...The first episode was a seizure and during the seizure he must have left teeth marks in the cord. Tests showed that Romeo's bile acid was at 226, normal levels are 7-15. Yet, his owner said he never saw anything wrong with him, it still would have been too late to save him - apparently, he had liver shunt.
Our rescue, with the help of donations and the re-homing fees we charge, paid his medical bill of $1,236.67. A huge Thank You to all who donated!
